Police Save Three From Icy Waters In New York

The NYPD Aviation Unit, Scuba Team, and Emergency Service Unit teamed up with FDNY crews to rescue three people submerged in the freezing waters of Jamaica Bay on Friday, February 6, 2025. Dramatic drone footage captured the helicopter rescue near Norton Drive in Far Rockaway, Queens, after witnesses reported seeing three young men walking across frozen bay ice around 4:15 p.m. when they suddenly fell through and became fully submerged. Saltwater bay ice is notoriously unstable compared to pond ice, forming in unpredictable patches weakened by underwater currents that aren't visible from the surface. Even during extended freezing temperatures, ice can be dangerously thin in random areas. Once in water this cold, hypothermia becomes the immediate threat, with the body shutting down in minutes. All three victims were pulled from the water and transported to local hospitals. The rescue highlights the coordinated efforts of New York's emergency response teams and the hidden dangers of walking on frozen bays.

System To Bring Welcome Mountain Snow To West

Much of the West has been enduring above-average temperatures and below-average snowfall, which has really impacted the snowpack across the West. Fortunately, that pattern will change, bringing some rain and much needed mountain snowfall to the West. Rainfall of 1-3 inches is possible across the lower elevations and pockets of snowfall across the highest elevations could exceed 5 inches. Even Salt Lake City, which has only seen 0.1 inches of snowfall this season, could see some of the white stuff. Watch for the latest forecast.

A viral video from Allentown, Pennsylvania, shows a resident burying another driver's car in snow after the motorist took her freshly shoveled parking spot. The homeowner had spent three hours clearing the space during a winter storm that dumped a foot of snow across eastern Pennsylvania. When she returned to find another vehicle parked there, she covered the car completely with snow.
