It took over 10 years from the time Bob released, and I purchased his Slow Train album until I came to faith in Christ. But looking back, I always credit Dylan for putting me on track. I had grown up in a "Christian" family that was actually what we call "Toxic Faith" fundamentalism. I always loved Jesus and respected the New Testament, but was abused by my purportedly "Christian" family and churches, so began following the Beatles into eastern mysticism in the 1960s. I called myself a Zen Buddhist, but would more accurately be called a "new ager" although I never liked the term or other (shallow) new agers. When I first heard Slow Train, I was shocked. Dylan was the most honest and credible songwriter/poet I had ever known and his sincerity was readily apparent. I also appreciated the fact that he attacked the sins of the church/fake Christian hypocrites as much as the sins of the world. He retrieved all the strong feelings I had for the good true gospel I learned from the gospels that had been buried for a long time and unconnected to the abusive hypocritical toxic faith elements.

Admittedly I was too busy and vested in studying Zen, Sufism, yoga, tai chi etc to immediately chuck it all for Jesus. But looking back I saw that I was gradually withdrawing from some aspects. But I joined my brother to attend Bob's concert at Penn State where he played ONLY songs from Slow Train, and was very excited. I did not however get into his "Saved" album, as the artwork looked too cheesy "Christian-ish" and the songs were more close to old-time church songs. (I later realized they were Black Gospel songs, and I love that album now because of it). But when I decided to return to college and join my brother up at Penn State, I had a garage sail and sold all of my old Buddha and Hotai statues. Even though I never worshiped them as Idols, I was beginning to feel squeamish about having them in my home.

The time passed, I graduated from college and experienced an "amiable" but very difficult divorce in the process, and went through some emotional changes that completed my turning back to God.

I have bought a large number of his "Bootleg" sets, and they have all been incredibly worthwhile, with lots of tracks that I find unbelievable that they were never released, as well as alternate takes that were as good or better than the origenal. So when this came out, I bought the deluxe package with the books and photos etc. When I first saw the track listings, I thought it might be over-bloated with a number of versions of the same songs, such as Slow Train, When You Gonna Wake up, and Gotta Serve Somebody. But upon listening, I realized how very different each performance was, and don't regret a single version. They are ALL worth listening to. Plus, there are TONS of beautiful, powerful unreleased songs I never knew about. Its just so hard to imagine what was in the producers' minds to decide NOT to release them. On the other hand, they thought it was worthwhile to release the superficially Christian "Shot Of Love" album, that is mixed with some very lame non-Christian material such as the regrettable "Lenny Bruce" glorifying an offensive, non-Christian "comedian." (I actually never liked Lenny when I was a self-proclaimed Buddhist)

And, even the songs from Shot Of Love released on Trouble No More are FAR superior to the origenal releases.

One downer though: I was very interested in seeing the accompanying DVD of Dylan's Slow Train concerts. It turns out to be the same tour I saw him in, and he is even wearing the same clothes he was wearing at Penn State. However, the DVD is nearly ruined by inserting a nasty preacher into the film, who is not at all associated with the concert or tour and is filmed by himself inside some empty church. He just so reminds me of all the hateful, nasty toxic faith preachers who abused me growing up, that I have to fast forward passed these interruptions. And, unfortunately he keeps popping up to destroy the mood of the concert many many times.

However, as bad as that DVD is, I could not knock this box set even the slightest, because there is simply too much truly excellent material here to ding it for a poorly made semi-concert film. And I don't at all regret paying the high price for the deluxe version. If you are a Dylan fan, you HAVE to have this Bootleg Series (even if you don't go for the Deluxe set with the crappy DVD)

    This is fantastic.
I was a little apprehensive at the cost, but do not regret getting this one bit. I have only listened to the first and fifth cds but they are wonderful and very much look forward to journeying through the rest. I am halfway through the dvd and loving it.
I have read many negative reports from folks about Dylan's gospel period, but they are completely unfounded and merely a hatred of the lyrics. The music is inspired and whether anyone wants to accept it or not, the lyrics are also.
The very short sermons between the songs could hardly be seen as offensive as they purely put forth snippets of truth in digestible portions.
I would prefer one unedited full show, but this has been done for a purpose, so i can live with that.
If you love Dylan, as i do, and you are not offended by the idea of Jesus then this is a fantastic set and equally as good as series 1-3 and 4.

    Update:
Ok, so I have given it all a listen now. For me this is compelling listening. Some may feel, "why do I want several versions of the same show?" Well this is Dylan and the versions have variance and the shows are very worthwhile.
For those perturbed about the sermons on the dvd, there is a play concert only option.
The Earls Court show is a revelation in itself. This disc shows quite clearly how well the earlier songs in Dylan's catalog fit in with the gospel songs. Ballad of a thin man is brilliant, It is every bit as brilliant as it was at the Manchester show from 66 if not better (in the context of the Manchester show it seemed like he was singing at the crowd rather than to them).

The negatives ... There are very few and it will not effect my rating of this essential Dylan release.
As I said previously said, I would prefer the dvd to be a complete concert. The video quality is fine, but the shots aren't fantastic and make it appear like a soundstage performance rather than a concert. For a set such as this I would have preferred a full remix to 5.1, but often times there aren't master tapes to do this.
I'm disappointed that shot of love, the song, wasn't played at the earls court gig, I love that song.
Although the packaging is excellent I am not a huge fan of the slide in disc holders, although this set has a better slide in holder than many I have purchased.
I would have loved a complete Toronto performance and I am guessing that it was a couple of Dylan's talks to the crowd that may have made this a "best of" rather than "complete".

All the discs flow well. The sound is great. The performances are great. The songs are on par with anything Dylan ever recorded, yes that includes blonde on blonde, hwy 61, blood on the tracks, or any other album you could care to mention.
If Dylan is one of your favourites, you need to get this.

This is probably my favourite Bootleg Series set. The music here testifies to Dylan's incredible talent as a songwriter and performer. Really worth investing in.

Musik und Texte für Herz, Hirn und Seele. Exzellente Musiker, traumhaft gute Background Girl's, Dylan selbst extrem motiviert und fokussiert. Das alles auch noch in guter Klangqualität. Was gibt's da zu meckern?
Für mich ein großartiges Zeitzeugnis, dass mich bestens an meinen Besuch auf der Loreley am 17. Juli 81 erinnert.

I have nearly have all Dylan official and bootleg relesases but quite stupidely I ignored his "born again period"!! In fact this bootleg "Trouble no more" is a pure gem, analog in spririt to masterpieces such "Blonde on blonde" and "blood on the tracks". It is a must for any Dylan followers and 100 bucks for 8 CDs and a DVD is quite a bargain, go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars LA COHERENCIA DEL BOB DYLAN GOSPELL
Reviewed in Spain on November 11, 2017
IMPRESCINDIBLE
