The Detroit Public Library will be participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program, providing after school meals at select library locations beginning the week of October 13, 2025. Youth 18 years of age and younger, as well as adults with physical and mental disabilities, will be eligible for the meals.

Film lovers are invited to the Detroit Public Library on Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm to participate in the MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival. The Library will be screening the 10 short film finalists for FREE, and viewers will be asked to vote for their favorite!

Join us on Fridays at 4:00 pm for an eclectic selection of musicians and genres, sure to appeal to a wide range of interests and tastes.

September 23rd marks the International Day of Sign Languages, celebrated during National Deaf Awareness Month and the International Week of Deaf People. These periods are dedicated to recognizing Deaf culture, history, and the lived experiences of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

The third annual Educators Night will take place on September 23rd, 2025 from 4 - 7pm. Educators Night is a free evening designed to connect teachers, school administrators, and educators from across Southeast Michigan with the rich educational and cultural resources of the Detroit Cultural Center and its nonprofit partners.

The Sherwood Forest Branch Library, located at 7117 W. Seven Mile Road near Livernois, reopened to the public on Monday, September 22, 2025. The branch was closed over the summer for maintenance.

ProjectArt is back at the Detroit Public Library for a new year of free art classes for children and teens! Classes run from the week of September 29th, 2025 through the week of May 27th, 2025. While enrollment is ongoing throughout the year, registration is required as space is limited. This year, you can find ProjectArt at five library locations throughout the city.

The Detroit Public Library (DPL) is excited to present an art and poetry exhibition to showcase the library’s talented, artistic staff, who are employed throughout the library system. This exhibition, Designing After Hours: Artwork by Detroit Public Library Staff, is presented in conjunction with Detroit Month of Design and will be on display in the library’s Galleria through fall 2025.

The Detroit Public Library has received a number of questions about the removal of several trees and shrubs at Main Library. Please note that the trees and shrubs were removed due to disease. This was a necessary step to ensure the safety of our visitors and staff, and allow for a healthier and more sustainable landscape. Further, we are proud to announce the launch of a comprehensive beautification initiative for the Main Library campus, through a collaboration with DJ’s Landscape Management.
