Verizon Messages (Message+) FAQs

Verizon Messages (Message+) is a texting app that lets you sync your texting conversations across all your compatible devices. Verizon Messages (Message+) is separate from your phone's other texting apps (i.e., iMessage, Google Messages, etc.).

Important: Verizon will start to shut down the Message+ app on 10/2/24. The app will be fully discontinued on 12/9/24.

Verizon Messages (Message+) discontinuation

When is Verizon Messages (Message+) being discontinued?

Verizon will start to shut down the Message+ app on 10/2/24. The app will be fully discontinued on 12/9/24.

When the Message+ app is shut down:

    • You won't be able to use the Message+ app to send and receive messages.
    • Any Message+ messages you previously scheduled to be sent on or after 12/9/24 will not be sent.
    • You won't be able to view the Message+ app in the Apple app® store or Google Play™ Store.

For Android™ devices, Verizon recommends switching to Google Messages as the replacement app for messaging. For more information, see VZ Messages Recommendations.

Apple Messages is recommended for iPhone® and iPad® devices.

Good to know: During system maintenance before Message+ shuts down, your group texts may see messages with a 588 area code which means that your number has "left the group". This doesn't need any action on your part. You can delete or ignore these network notification texts.

What other Message+ changes are happening?

    Other changes are:

    • eGift cards are no longer available to buy through Message+ after April 2024. You can redeem previously purchased eGift cards after this date.
    • Messaging Web Client Access - The ability to send and receive text messages on Verizon’s website was discontinued as of 12/11/23. Your message history will remain. You can continue to use the Android and iOS versions on mobile devices or the Mac® desktop version. We recommend using Google Messages to continue to send and receive text messages in a web browser.

Will I still be able to access my Message+ messages after 12/9/24?

    Why is Verizon discontinuing Message+?

The message space is rapidly changing and we want you to have the best messaging experience:

    • Rich Communications Service (RCS) provides a more interactive and modern messaging experience in Google Messages.
    • Google Messages is now preloaded on all Verizon Android devices.
    • Starting with iOS 18, iPhone users also can communicate using RCS.

Get more information about Google Messages.

How do I move to Google Messages?

    To move to Google Messages:

    • Open the app. When you first open the app, you can make Google Messages your default SMS app by tapping Set default SMS app message.
    • Tap and hold Google Messages in the app tray and drag it to the dock.

Does Verizon Messages (Message+) replace the native texting app on my phone, or can I switch between apps?

Verizon Messages (Message+) may be the default Messaging app on many Verizon Android devices. On some devices, it doesn't replace the native texting app.

You can switch between the native texting app on your phone and Verizon Messages (Message+). Messages sent or received in one app will also appear in the other app.

You may receive duplicate notifications or only receive notifications from one app, depending on your notification settings. In addition, there may be differences in functionality that impact your messaging experience (e.g., on some devices, if you use the native app to send a group message to iPhone, it may change your thread from group MMS to mass text).

We recommend selecting a primary messaging app, instead of jumping back and forth.

Important: Verizon will start to shut down the Message+ app on 10/2/24. The app will be fully discontinued on 12/9/24.

Does Verizon Messages (Message+) include an address book that's different from my device's address book?

To improve your messaging experience, you can use Verizon Cloud to back up all contacts from your primary smartphone to Verizon Cloud. This will let your contacts be synced in Verizon Messages (Message+) on any devices or the web.
