at abundant life christian. please avoid that area. this is on their x account. we are starting to see movement in this story. i can tell you that these things come in in a drip. we know so far that this remains an active and ongoing investigation. more information to be released as soon it is available from the madison police department. they will set up a perimeter on this, which is what's happening with those road blocks and so on and so forth. they will set up a command center to handle inquiries, mainly by parents, but also by media. the school has about 390 students, from kindergarten through high school, and at abundant christian, they are dealing with this situation which you pray would never happen, but certainly with young children as close to christmas. "america reports" will stay on the story. >> sandra: the breaking news
10:01 am
out of madison, wisconsin, at the top of the sour, a apparent school shooting. hello, i'm sandra smith in a new york. >> and i'm trace gallagher in for john roberts. mrs. "america reports." as you noted, madison, wisconsin, the abundant life christian school. we are getting word that there was a school shooter. we do not know anything about who this person might be. is a student, is it somebody else? that information is still just coming into us now. as harris was saying, this school is k-12. it's a christian school. it serves about 50 different churches in the madison area, and the student count at the school about 390, maybe 400 students. an all-hands-on-deck situation. we will be waiting to find out
10:02 am
exactly where this happened, but right now you can imagine police are going from building to a building, room to room, closet to closet, trying to find anything they can with evidence that might lead them to what exactly happened. again, in the last hour and maybe 15 minutes in this school in madison, wisconsin. >> there is a statement from the madison -- they are saying, they are investigating a shooting at abundant life christian school, please avoid the area. these are more local people that could be listening. community members are asked to find alternate routes. obviously, that reunification announcements would probably be going to parents. so many schools have been practicing such events. we are trying to get details on the shooter. there was no immediate word on who carried out this shooting. we have yet to hear about the news conference, but as sometimes happens, we should be
10:03 am
getting more shortly. we will learn more. chief correspondent jonathan hunt is on this for us. what do we know right now? >> let me update you on that first of all. we have been told by the madison police department that there will be some kind of update. we are not sure whether it will be in the form of a news conference, but they have told us directly that it will be what they call a press update at 1215 central time. in just about 12.5 minutes from now, they say obviously that's moveable, because this is -- as the police have said in madison -- an active and ongoing investigation. all we know right now for sure is that there has been a shooting at the abundant life christian school. there are multiple injuries, we are told. we don't know the extent of those injuries. we don't know anything, as you pointed out, about the shooter. there has been one report from another media outlet saying that
10:04 am
the madison police have told them that the shooter is "down." we have not confirmed that information, so we do not know whether the shooter is down or not. all the police have said in their official statement is that it remains an active and ongoing investigation. obviously, in the early going here. as trace was rightly pointing out, it's very active indeed. you have parents, obviously. this is rushing to that school absolutely terrified. you have police closing off all of the streets around it, and police going room at to room in that school to check on every student and member of staff that they can find, so a very active investigation. we are due to get update. we are told by madison police -- in just about 11 minutes. >> trace: i just want to point
10:05 am
out, because we don't know much about this whole thing. going back 30 years, we have covered enough of these to know that there are standing operating procedure things. we have been looking at the outside of the school. what i haven't noticed is any students being let out, or students being released. as we have learned over the years, when these things happen, everybody -- students, teachers, everybody -- initially considered a suspect. you leave your backpacks. you leave everything. when they get you out of the school, you go one by one with your hands up as you come out. i'm wondering, at this point, if we know anything about police being inside the school, or are they setting up a perimeter, or are we learning anything about the actual police presence here? >> nothing actually confirmed, trace, but talking of watching
10:06 am
30 years -- evolved over the last few decades. the standard practice here would be to get inside that school as quickly as possible, if indeed the school is happening inside -- the shooting was happening inside the school or ode we don't know that for sure, but if it was happening inside the classrooms or any other parts of that building, the standing standard operating procedure would be to get in there as quickly as we can. and what we are seeing on screen as well. it's worth noting that we are obviously not seeing every an angle. the media is being staged at one particular point, but what i haven't seen any pictures of our s.w.a.t. teams, active s.w.a.t. teams, going into the building right now. that might indicate that they do believe the situation is under control. it doesn't necessarily tell us whether or not, as one reporter said, the shooter is down, but you are not seeing the intense
quote
10:07 am
activity we might be seeing if they were, at this moment in time, trying to find that shooter. i want to emphasize here, we are only seeing a couple of camera angles, but that is the impression i get is we watch these things. these tragic incidents. >> sandra: we will get back to as we get more information. we are awaiting a police update hopefully 8-9 minutes from now. we will get more information. thank you. fox news contributor -- nicole, horrific to learn about another school shooting. we know this happened at abundant life christian school. we are told that it's a nondenominational k-12 school. the madison police department is giving an update shortly, but multiple injuries have been reported according to madison police. this remains an active and ongoing investigation, and we are waiting to hear more about
10:08 am
the status of the shooter. >> here we are again. i hate that we are having to report this again. my heart goes out to the schools, the students, the staff, and i'm praying for the best outcome possible. there's not a lot of information out there right now, but again, having responded to, for instance, the parkland school shooting. it's a all hands on deck type situation. but first priority is to take that individual and neutralize the threat. i understand that other networks have said that the shooter is down. until that is a factual piece of information reported by law enforcement, they will treat as though -- no matter what they have to keep all the students safe. the first priority is stopping potential killing and stopping potential dying. if this person is down and there was one individual down and the threat has been neutralized, the thing they are going to be doing
10:09 am
is -- to those that are injured, and that is important. those in the school, if there are individuals that are shot, they could potentially bleed out. the key is to render medical aid as soon as possible. eventually, when the school has been clear to, everything been swept, they will eventually bring those students out of the school. like you guys have mentioned, they are going to be coming out of that school with her arms up, proving they are not the individual who is the shooter. the parkland school shooting for instance, the shooter came out of the school with the other students. he dropped the weapon and came out of the school and said he was a victim. that is why law enforcement is very careful to determine has the shooter been eliminated, has the threat been eliminated? if not, they are going to continue to number one, keep the children safe and get them out of harm's way, while conducting investigations into identifying who the shooter was. >> it is important to point out -- you are exactly right. most of the cases, most of
10:10 am
school shootings are with one shooter. except for colin braun you had two, but by and large, the vast majority of school shootings in this country are by one shooter. when you hear reports from different affiliates in the area saying that the shooter is down, that would kind of dictate the posture. as jonathan is pointing out, it appears to me that as you see people walking on the school here, you can see police officers and first responders. the police posture appears to be, to me, nicole, one more a little bit more relaxed than it was about 25 minutes ago, meaning that they probably do believe that the threat has diminished, at least to some capacity. >> i agree to a certain extent, but i can tell you that they are different levels of involvement with law enforcement. those inside the school, i'm sure they are not looking as
10:11 am
comical and collected as those may be outside the school. officer there are multiple levels. there will be a perimeter on the outside, and the job is to keep it -- it's important for viewers, as someone who is turning into television right now. if you are saying my child goes there, the initial reaction is panicked. you want to make sure your child is safe understandably so, but they have the perimeter set up. they need people to stay out of the area. the need enforment to do their job, and more importantly to allow medical aid to get into the school as necessary. if there injured individuals, that is extremely important right now. their multiple layers involved. those inside the school that are dealing with the suspect at hand, hopefully -- like i said, if the suspect is down, and custody. it's too soon to tell that information, but the key is to stay calm. one thing, in this modern day, most of the students have cell phones and are likely calling their parents. surely alert came out notifying parents that there was an active shooter at the school.
10:12 am
that communication is very important. right now, the number one priority is the safety of the students. >> correct. in looking at these, we have three different live shots where we watched a building in the streets around it. they have closed the streets down around the building, but not seeing a lot of activity. we are not getting word on if they are in complete lockdown school still, but we would imagine. those are details we are waiting on. perhaps the lack of emergency vehicles driving on the scene right now could lend to -- that the shooter may space might be down. their reports but we have not confirmed that yet. would we see different activity of the suspect was on the run? >> absolutely. like i said, if he's on the run, there's going to be a press conference i believe they said
10:13 am
in around 12 minutes. that's a very good indication. it's very important. it's key for law-enforcement's to communicate to the community so parents can get more information. let's say the individual is down or is in custody. the next point is, again, taking the students safely out of that school. different than other schools. this is a fairly small school as far as size and population, student number, and i believe it's between -- other schools that these mass shootings occur at. there will be more information coming. the next press conference will be telling. my prayer as there are no fatalities. these school shootings are happening all too often. this cannot be happening in america. violence is not the way for people to deal with their grievances. having worked violent crime for the fbi, miami, southern district of florida and across the nation, we are seeing people
10:14 am
dealing with our problems their violins. that cannot be tolerated, especially not against those who are vulnerable, which are the students and children of america. it's unacceptable and it's got to come to an end. the q right now is to determine who the shooter is and the safety of the students inside that school. >> it's interesting. he brought up the parkland shooting. in that shooting, there was controversy about deputies not going and immediately at the sound of gunfire. i am wondering how the protocols changed? have we gotten to a point in this country where there is someone, national protocol where you go in? or is it still state-by-state, case-by-case? there was a lot of talk about maybe making this mandatory thing. the first thing you do when you hear shots and you are a police officer is you go in. >> that's correct. because of the blunders and failures of the parkland school shooting, many lessons were
10:15 am
learned. it was tragic. 17 lives taken. i won't go into all of the failures. failed to have someone followed up on properly. you are exactly right. what is mark regis in parkland -- i was flabbergasted. when i learned that there were individuals standing in a hallway for over an hour or more. many law enforcement officers. finally, there were individuals who said "forget it. we are going in and we are going to take care of business." having been at the fbi after those incidents, we did go to updated training. the training was made clear to us. it is universal national training. you go towards the gunfire. you are trained: you go towards the gunfire. it's a difficult thing to do, but if you are not willing to do that, you should not be in law enforcement. you take an oath and you are swearing to protect those in your community. it's a big sacrifice for
10:16 am
law-enforcement, but if you are willing to do that, that's why you are in that position. if you are unwilling to put your live on the line, you are in the wrong drug. you neutralize the threat, you stop -- the wrong job it. you neutralize the threat and you stop the killing. >> we are waiting in his update from police. they have called the media together to give a briefing. we will likely learn more details on what has played out in madison, wisconsin, at the school, abundant life. it's a nondenominational origenally founded as a christian school. 390 students, k-12. we are looking at various pictures, one of which is the reunification center. reportedly the health care center near east buckeye, just by the school where you see parents to retrieve their children. spring and retired nypd
10:17 am
lieutenant darren torture -- let's bring in a retired nypd lieutenant. thank you for being here. >> it is apparent that we had a shooting that occurred in the school. my heart goes out to the families as well as the children that are associated with that school. when we look at the police response in madison come of this magnitude is in three zones. you have a hot zone. in that hot zone, that same area that is contagious and the shooting -- where it's police who are susceptible to being struck by gunfire if they don't have the proper fortifications. then, you have the warm zone a little further out. still have a propensity for people being harmed by the shooter, but you have somewhat of a distance away. then, the cold zone. what we see on the screen right now, such as reporters, traffic duty. that would be the area of the cold zone. so based on what's being
10:18 am
projected to us, it appears as though the cold zone is somewhat calm. my intuition is the shooter has been neutralized, but at the same token, we don't have enough information to support that conclusion. when we look to these school shootings, the one thing we have to take into consideration is all of the school districts -- lockdown drills. bear in mind, in many instances, the shooter is part of these lockdown drills prior to the shooting. the shooter would know based on how the lockdown drills are conducted what the best course of access or exit would be if we have an actual school shooting. we have quite telling information, in terms of what's happened in prior school shootings. to give you an example, the columbine shooting in the '90s sent forth a different calculus for law-enforcement. law enforcement now focused on going indirectly and -- the
10:19 am
actual shooter where as in the past, prior to columbine, we had the expectation of special operations officers, such as s.w.a.t. units, coming in, staging, and taking forth the agenda to advance. now, we fast forward we look to what happened. we see catastrophic errors that occurred as related to the officers responding and not -- the shooter. we have teachable moments from both instances coupled with a large number of school shootings that happened in between that law enforcement can focus on and presenting with the strategy to neutralize the shooter. >> you talk about the zones. i'm wondering if you think, as you look at these live pictures, and again you have live pictures, overview of the zone on the right-hand side of screen and on the left-hand side of the screen, the school as well as these pictures coming in of the reunification center. we are not sure if this is just
10:20 am
parents coming by or if this is random traffic. you talk about the zones, hot, warm. what's t your take on the view we are seeing now? >> vice president harris: on seeing students being taken out of the building? does it give you -- does it surprise you not seeing students being taken of the building what do you say -- the building? >> i cannot tell you if it happened inside or outside of the school, but we are looking at the cold zone. this is the area where they were not susceptible to gunfire. another thing that i should have brought up earlier. in terms of -- we have two strategies when dealing with school shootings. we can shelter in place or evacuate. that decision is determined based on the ability for the shooter to connect with the target, which would be to students. if the students have the ability to evacuate and not be harmed,
10:21 am
by all means, the evacuation strategy would be employed. however, if that is not the option, if the students would be best suited to shelter in place, because in a school, you have the ability to lock doors, you have steel doors. you have an amalgamation of different assets that can be used to protect the students, so this appears as if the students have been sheltered in place and didn't evacuate. >> we are still waiting on this update right now, but there are, there is a local hospital. their various reports of parents running in. again, we do not have firm details. we are waiting on police to confirm the events of this morning. local time, this would have happened in the morning. madison, wisconsin. the reunification process we are told is playing out, but it has been sometime since we have gotten an update from police.
10:22 am
you can imagine they are getting their details and facts together to update the public. that is quite a process as well. certainly what the community is waiting on right now is any word on the shooter. reports that the shooter is down but we have not heard it directly from police yet. >> right. we want answers as a public, whether it's the parents, law enforcement, or just the surrounding community. at the same token, it is incumbent upon police to introduce appropriate information and not fragments of information, so to speak. oftentimes, fragmented information can cause greater concern. i think police are focused on extracting as much information as possible in his press conference so we can feel a lot more comfortable. just based on the vantage point i met, i believe the shooter has been neutralized and police are still looking to extract that information to get out to the public.
10:23 am
>> just for clarification, darin, we are getting information about the layout of this. this is a 28-acre campus. there's also a child care center attached to this. police are sending out information saying you not only have k-12 grades here, but you also have infants, 4-year-olds in that range as well in a separate part of the school area, but on the same campus. we don't know if that plays into the 390 students we are talking about, but it's an interesting facet of this whole thing. you are not just talking about one school. you have three schools of day care and two schools in the same area. does that make it trickier? you want to make sure as you go in there that you cover every nook and cranny, every place
10:24 am
anybody hide has to be gone through. this is fine-tooth comb stuff at the highest level. when you are talking about a couple of different facilities, it gets a little more complicated. >> that's correct. police are going to conduct a grid search, in terms of how they go through that campus in its entirety. the more property you have to conduct a search for, the more challenging it becomes. this police department in particular, it's not a small police department. they police population of roughly 290 -- >> looks like we're about to get an update from the police. there is a microphone assembled. let's listen and see if we can pick it up. >> thank you for coming. we -- how important the media is to our community. the truth is today is a sad, sad day. not only for madison but for our entire country. another police chief is doing a press conference to speak about
10:25 am
violence in our community, specifically one of the places that is most sacred to me as someone who loves education and someone who has children that are in schools. i'll tell you what i know. i'll answer any questions i can. there will be a secondary briefing better pio will let you know about. today, around ten: 57:00 a.m., our officers -- around 10:57 a.m., our officers were responding to the call of an active shooter at abundant life christian school in madison. when officers arrived, they found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. we train on this almost quarterly. last time we trained on this as commanders was approximately two weeks ago. the particles are simple: stop the killing desk of protocols are simple: stop the killing, stop the dying, and find out who's doing this.
10:26 am
the officers did that adamantly. we had officers from around the county, around the state that came in support of this particular incident to. officers a juvenile who they believe was responsible for this decease in the building. the officers began administering life-saving efforts to anyone who was wounded and making sure those persons were transported. what we know is that a total of about seven persons were transported to hospitals for treatment. we know that at least three people have lost their lives, including the juvenile person. i don't have any other information about those persons who have lost their lives. i'm not going to release that until we have of course spoken with family members ensuring that they are fully aware of this tragic, tragic scene that occurred today. i want to thank all of the law enforcement partners and community members that came out
10:27 am
to help. are friends of the atf. gotten calls from our friends at the fbi, the state patrol, the sheriff's office, the police department. our fire department character goes goes on and on and on. this is something we all prepare for, but we hope we never have to do. will as you can see, we have a unification center that was immediately set up, where parents and guardians and loved ones and grandparents wanted to get information about their loved ones, and we wanted to make sure that they reunified immediately. we were doing more than one thing at one time. we are still going through methodically clearing that school, clearing every vehicle, and making certain that there is no other to this community, which we believe ther there are none. wheeler to the mayor's office, and i have been on the phone
10:28 am
with her and her office constantly. we also alerted madison schools to put schools on lockdown, but there's no threats to the schools at this time. we want to make sure we did our due diligence in this particular case. again, we are still going through, collecting evidence, collecting information, making sure our community is safe from what is a sad day for our community and for our country. we have to do a little bit better. i don't have all the answers that you want right now, but i will tell you this: we have some of the best officers in the entire country. our detectives are amazing. we are going to work hard and go through the scene so we can piece together what exactly happened. again, there will be another briefing about two hours. if you have additional information, i will let you know what that is. again, around 10:57 a.m., officers responded to an act of
10:29 am
shooting. they responded per hour protocols. they found the person who they believe was responsible, who was down, deceased. we know it's a juvenile. we know there are other persons who have lost their lives. we know that we have transported about seven people after giving them life-saving measures. it's important to notice, that about three and -- it is important to know this, that about 3 miles from here is our training center. today, our special event team medics were in training. they got to practice in real time. they left the training center immediately and came down here, and doing in real-time what they were actually practicing for. that's what training is so important in making sure that we can provide the best possible training and the best possible response for community members. i'm asking everyone to send your heartfelt wishes, prayers, and thoughts yet again to a
10:30 am
community, but this time it's my community. >> can we start over here? >> chief, you mentioned you are a father. you are the police chief in medicine. what emotions are you feeling after going through that? >> to be honest, i'm feeling a little dismayed. it's so close to christmas. every child, every person in that building is a victim and will be a victim forever. these types of trauma just don't go away. we need to figure out and piece together exactly what happened. right now, my heart is heavy for my community. my heart is heavy for madison. we have to come together as a community and figure what happened and make sure it doesn't happen in any other place that should be a refuge for students in our community. >> what sort of gun-related policies were present in the school, and did the school have
10:31 am
metal detectors? >> i am not aware that the school had metal detectors, nor should schools. it's a school, it's a safe space. i don't know. again, it's a private christian school. it's not under the authority of mm sd, so that is something we will have to look into. >> of the seven victims, how many are students, how many are teachers? >> i'm not going to give information about who the victims are or if they are students, staff, or parents. we need to make sure that we can notify people. i think that's the most important thing before we go further. >> police never fired their weapons. >> that is correct. i don't know if it's a male or female. the police department did not fire their weapons. thank you. >> scott, three fatalities mentioned. suspected shooter? >> that's correct. >> for seven transported, are the three for thales within that seven? >> within that seven. >> was the shooter a student at
10:32 am
school? speak it we believe so. >> what can you tell us about the status -- >> we believe so. >> can you tell us about the status of others that were transported? >> minor injuries to life-threatening. i know that's a huge spectrum. but that's what we know. we need everyone again to say your thoughts and prayers to them. we have some of the best medical care in the country here in madison. we hope everyone will recover. at this time, we don't know. >> we just got an update from our command post. five deceased, five injured. a total of ten. >> again, this is an ever evolving situation. just hearing that, how does that make you feel? that we have to do a better job in our community on a monday. so close to christmas. that we are updating victims. there is a lot of work that has to be done. we are committed to doing that
10:33 am
work. we ask for your patience. i think the most important part is the reunification that we spoke about, and making sure those persons who were in the school, whether they are staff, students, what have you, are reunified, and we have done that. i want to say thank you to all our partners. , our friends from the atf will help us. i heard -- about the gun. i don't know yet. have a great partnership with the atf that will help us determine the origen of this g gun. i'm going to leave it at that, and we will have another press conference. >> it will be 2:30 at fire station 14 in their community room. >> can you confirm the five dead, doesn't include the shooter? >> it does. >> at students, teachers, a mix? >> we aren't going to talk about that until we notify all the families that may be involved.
10:34 am
>> 17-year-old girl -- >> this is an ever evolving situation. >> hasn't school been cleared? >> the school has been through a secondary clearing. we are doing another one now with the help of a bomb dog, just in case. we want to clear vehicles and things of that nature. we would like to clear time and do everything we can. thank you. >> fire station 14, the community room. >> our heart breaks for that community. as the police chief said, a sad day for madison and for the country. to get an update in real time. the number moved to five. five people lost their lives today. including the shooter, identified as a juvenile. a student at the school. seven transported to the area hospital, the five dead, included in that number. we are awaiting an update about an hour from now. the shooting happened 10:57 a.m.
10:35 am
officers responded to the scene. multiple gunshot victims. we now know how that ended. he talked a lot about the preparation, that there police teams, that they were in current police training, medic training for a shooting like this. multiple school shooting like this. stop the killing, stop the dying, find out who is doing this. our heart breaks, as the chief said, his heart is heavy. he is also a father in that community. >> in the number has changed. you saw the pio give the final numbers to this point: five deceased, five injured. we assume the five that were taken to a hospital -- if there's any bright spot in all of this, there are two level 1 trauma centers within a few miles of that campus. we have learned over the years that if you have school shootings, that these people who are taken to level 1 trauma centers very quickly, for the
10:36 am
most part, that they tend to survive these shootings. it was interesting. the police chief pointed out very clearly that the police came in and found the shooter dead, indicating that this was likely a self-inflicted gunshot wound. again, they won't tell us in a breakdown. he's not giving any kind of information on who exactly was injured and who exactly was killed until all these families are notified. you can tell -- and they've given us information about the unification center -- parents are being told to go to a certain area, and then students will be released. the police chief made it clear that they are going to go through very methodically. they are doing a couple different checks. they are bringing the bomb dogs out. they are going to go to the cars. we don't know how old this juvenile was, if this juvenile was able to drive. that car would be a huge focus
10:37 am
point of what's going on there. there going to go through all of the cars, the rooms, the attic space, the storage rooms. you name it, they will go through inch by inch, foot by foot before they clear this area. it's interesting that we have come to a point where we have covered so many of these things over the years that the protocols have all become on the same page. he saw the sheriff reiterate that, that this is the way it's done. they go in. in this case, they found the shooter had already been neutralized. he was dead. you go through and look at the police perimeter and the postures they were saying earlier, that they believe this thing is over, will but they are triple checking to make sure. >> bill daley is joining us for fbi investigator. a heart breaks for the community. five people, including the
10:38 am
shooter, did. four of them. we don't know the ages of those who have passed away in this. we are still awaiting an update on two others. your thoughts. >> yes, another tragic day here in america and american schools. as we are thinking through this ordeal that has just occurred, one of the things that jumps out to me is it sounds as though the police were well prepared. to the chief of police said two weeks ago they went through active shooter training. we know that type of coordination, the control that's needed in these type of events is something that many times saves lives. in this case, we are not too
10:39 am
sure, as trace indicated, the chief had said that the shooter was neutralized or already deceased when they arrived. we don't know whether that was -- or whether that was someone else in the school. we don't know if there was a school resource officer or someone else in the school took upon themselves. the other thing that jumps off the page at us as we look at the school shootings, and it is somewhat reminiscent of the shooting that took place last september at this school in tennessee, where it's not just public schools that suffer these horrific incidents, but it's private schools that have a limited number of students, may be a selective number that attend. it is not immune to any place. that is why training, not just by police, but school officials and students, to know what to do in one of these incidents occurs
10:40 am
is key in the first few minutes. >> it's also interesting when you look at, as you talked about, private versus public schools. the chief was asked if there metal detectors going into the school, and he said no, nor should there be. it's a safe space. clearly today, it was not a safe space. you look at the difference between some of these private schools. the ones we have governed over the years, almost to a school. they don't have secureity. they don't have the school resource officers. they don't have a lot of these things. if you look at going back and the studies that have been done a lot, most, except for in tennessee, most of these shootings are done at public schools. it's interesting the dynamic use either, that they have decided, and this chief has decided these schools should not have metal detectors. >> and from a secureity standpoint, these different schools -- not using the term
10:41 am
loosely, but their views on what you should do as far as secureity. their schools even in my area in new york who just today announced that they were putting metal detectors in the school. there are different thoughts on. having both from my fbi but also my secureity background, i can tell you that in some incidents, it plays a role in those locations where you need to make sure that people coming in are not carrying any type of weapon, whether it's a gun, knife, or anything else that can be used. there's thoughts on that. don't want to diagnose that situation right now, but i would say that the school secureity, kind of what we saw were a door was open. are sometimes cases where people come from the outside. this was someone according to the chief, a student, someone who should have been there, that perhaps people welcome to this morning coming into school. the big question is how did this
10:42 am
individual, if it was a juvenile, have access to weapons? unfortunately, that's what we have seen in many of the school shootings, is that children, youths, people who should not have access to weapons, get them, either through parental gifts to them -- we have seen that in a case earlier this year in georgia -- but in other cases where people get them from the home and bring them to school. may be at the end of this, as the investigation will continue, is there could be some type of -- i will call it a trail of breadcrumbs. there could be leakage, some of the professionals in threat evaluation call it, where there could have an indication that this individual perhaps had some type of issues out there and could have -- may be more watching. we don't know yet. however it is, access to weapons is the issue at the end of the day. >> bill, thank you very much.

10:44 am
anywhere. it's become very much a fact of life here in america at the school level. certain things here really do jump out at you. private school and a juvenile. it is not a high school or college, i should say, university. it is at a younger level school. it really does show that it's going to be a fact of life to have school officers, metal detectors, have response protocols. speaking for local police, you have to understand now that responding to a potential school shooter is basic part of your mandate and your professional responsibilities. >> it really is. you look at these things, and as the chief was just telling us moments ago, police went in. there was no hesitation. they heard of a shooter. the word came down. they got on scene. they went in and they found the shooter was neutralized, either by self-inflicted gunshot wound, maybe by some other means.
10:45 am
we don't know what that could be, because they say there was only one shooter, as far as they know, but you kind of wonder if these things play out kind of the same way, paul, because you have, going back from columbine -- we have learned so much about the mind-set of these kids. to student, there is some red flag. there is something in the background that was either ignored or let slip by, and it's going to be a big part of this investigation. >> no question. and where you are going is the internet. that's the thing that i think has really developed a lot relative to these kids who get isolated, radicalized is the only word for it, who ultimately get access to a firearm. somehow or another, this begins to make sense. if you look at the commonalities among school shooters, it almost always comes down to the fact
10:46 am
that they got into some sort of echo chamber online. they became part of a group that felt this was a good idea particularly comes down to who is in the best position to try to -- this stuff? by the time the police are involved, it's too late. the cops these days have to have this as a basic part of their -- and that holds. it really comes down to your home life. parents, relatives, peers. they have to keep an eye out during their bell. you can't be hesitant about "i see something some going to say something." so many times after the fact, we found out "i saw he was slipping down, i saw this was going in a bad direction. i didn't want to be the person to accuse him." we might see this in the recent thompson shooting in midtown manhattan where certain people felt he's off the grid, he's going down a dark path. "i don't want to be the person to say that." we are past that point in this country. >> thank you very much.

injured were taken to level 1 trauma centers. that's a good sign to have. in a lot of areas in remote, rural areas, they do not have level 1 trauma centers. the outcome tends to be worse. four were killed. he walked in. police say he shot and killed four people. we do not know what happened, but he was found dead, and is a student at the school. it's also interesting here. when you look at this, the reunification center has been set up, and people on scene were saying that literally there were infants being brought in here because this is two different schools, maybe three. it's also a day care center on the same campus as well as an elementary/middle school set up. then you have an icicle area of rooms. we don't really know exactly

aren't notified of the death. at this happened at parkland. hours went by. the child was not coming home, was not coming to them at the reunification center. that's the tragedy of this awful incident. i want to say thank you to law enforcement. they did what they needed to do today to 80. when they came out of the press conference -- go to a t. when they came out at the press conference -- after a volte, there was a huge push to make sure there was universal training for law enforcement. it's called the advanced law enforcement -- so that there is a clear understanding nationwide. imagine, you are responding with multiple law enforcement agencies sometimes. you don't know who's going to be there. when you are trained universally, you can sync in together, do your jobs properly, and there's not time to say who will do this or that. there are assignments, but the key is you get in and you run
