Cowboys claim Parrish off waivers, release Green
IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys claimed veteran safety Tony Parrish off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers and released rookie kick returner Skyler Green.
Parrish, who was picked up Thursday, is a nine-year veteran with 30 career interceptions. He was an All-Pro selection in 2003 when he had nine interceptions for the 49ers.
San Francisco released Parrish on Tuesday to make room for veteran linebacker Jay Foreman, who was signed to fill in while starting linebacker Derek Smith is out with a hamstring injury.
Parrish will provide veteran depth in the Cowboys secondary behind starters Roy Williams and Keith Davis. Pat Watkins, a rookie who started six games, has been playing in nickel situations.
Parrish, who once started 121 consecutive games, lost his starting job six weeks into this season and was inactive in the 49ers' last three games. He played the first four seasons of his career with Chicago before signing with San Francisco as an unrestricted free agent.
Green, a fourth-round pick, was drafted as a receiver but began the season on the practice squad while the Cowboys switched him to tailback. He was signed to the active roster Oct. 2 but has been active only two games, returning three kickoffs and five punts.
If Green clears waivers, the Cowboys likely would re-sign him to their practice squad.
