DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1430Z July 6, 2025

SMOKE:
Alaska/Canada/Eastern United States…
Wildfire activity across central Alaska and the Yukon continued to
generate large plumes of thick smoke which spread to the west, and
north. Fires in the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan and Manitoba
also produced thick smoke which moved to the east into the Atlantic,
and spread south over the eastern United States.

New Mexico/Texas...
A plume of thick to moderate smoke was observed in northwestern New
Mexico. Light density smoke spread across New Mexico and west Texas,
moved east, and merged with the smoke from Alaskan and Canadian fires
before continuing to the east.

Western United States…
Thick plumes of smoke were seen from fires in northern California and
produced a larger area of light smoke that spread northeast, across
southern Oregon towards southwest Idaho, and west, over the Pacific.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
