DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1420Z August 4, 2025
SMOKE: Alaska/Canada/Great Lakes... Widespread light smoke persisted across the northern region of the continent as it circulated to the east, reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Wildfires in the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba continued to produce dense smoke plumes which spread into large areas of moderate-to-heavy smoke and moved east across Ontario and Quebec, with the high density smoke thinning over southern Quebec and the medium density smoke extending as far east as the Atlantic before thinning out. As the smoke travels east, it also extends over the Great Lakes region and northeastern United States. Arizona/Utah/Central United States... The Monroe Canyon fire in central Utah and the Dragon Bravo fire in northern Arizona continued to produce light-to-heavy smoke plumes. Moderate-to-heavy smoke plumes were concentrated in northern Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, northern Texas and western Kansas with light density smoke extending south over Texas and northern Mexico. California… The Gifford Fire in southern California produced a large, moderate-to-heavy density smoke plume that drifted south over the western Channel Islands, extending south towards the Pacific coast of Baja California and northeast over northern Nevada. Libby THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG:http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
