DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z August 10, 2025

SMOKE:
Central Canada/Central United States...
Wildfires continued to produce a widespread area of dense smoke in
the central Canadian provinces. Thick smoke was observed over eastern
Saskatchewan and western Manitoba which spread south into eastern Montana
and the Dakotas as it travels towards the east. Moderate-to-light smoke
spread to the west across Alberta, east into the Atlantic, and south
covering much of Montana, northeastern Colorado, northern Nebraska,
Minnesota, and the Dakotas.

Newfoundland/Northeastern United States/Atlantic Ocean…
Wildfires were observed producing smoke plumes in Newfoundland and New
Brunswick as they merged with the light-to-heavy density smoke over the
north Atlantic Ocean as it circulates towards the east.

Colorado/Utah/Southwestern United States...
A fire in northwestern Colorado continued to produce thick-to-moderate
density smoke which moved to the southeast. Moderate smoke persisted from
the Gifford Fire in southern California. Smoke spread into the central
valley, thinning to the northeast. Fires in northeastern Utah produced
light-to-heavy smoke which moved southeast towards western Colorado.

DUST:
Tropical Atlantic…
Dust from the Sahara Desert is observed traveling west across the Atlantic
into the Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
