DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z August 19, 2025

SMOKE:
Northwest Territories….
Wildfires continues to remain active in the southern Northwest
Territories as they were observed producing an area of light to moderate
density smoke that was seen covering much of the Northwest Territories
and extending north into the Arctic Circle and east towards Nunavut.

Central and Eastern CONUS, South Central Canada, Gulf of America, and
the Atlantic Ocean...
Wildfires in the western United States continue to remain active,
including the wildfires in northern Nevada, central Wyoming, east
central Idaho, and western Montana. The wildfires produced light-to-heavy
density smoke with the light density smoke dispersed north over south
central Canada, south into the northern Gulf of America, and east over
the central and eastern United States as it extends into the Atlantic
Ocean. Within this portion of the western United States, an area of
moderate density, with localized high density, smoke was seen closer
to the ongoing wildfires. Heavy density smoke was seen concentrated in
northern Nevada, southwestern and east central Idaho, western Montana,
and central Wyoming.

North Atlantic Ocean and Western Europe….
An area of light density smoke that is believed to be from the Canadian
wildfires was seen over the North Atlantic Ocean and extending into
western Europe.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
