DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1430Z September 6, 2025

SMOKE:
Western Canada/Northwestern & Southwestern CONUS...
Wildfires continued to burn across western Canada and the northwestern
United States. Heavy smoke was observed this morning stretching southward
from the Northwest Territories over British Columbia and Alberta
and southeast into Washington, Idaho, and western Wyoming. Areas of
moderate smoke extended outward from the heavy plumes covering a large
portion of the Northwest Territories, the entirety of eastern British
Columbia, western Alberta. Washington, western Montana, Idaho, Wyoming,
and Colorado. Lighter smoke extended over Southeastern Yukon, western
Nunavut, western Alberta, northeastern Oregon, Montana, and Nebraska,
while also dispersing eastward over the Ohio Valley and finally reaching
the U.S. Mid-Atlantic and New England. A smaller concentration of moderate
density smoke was situated over the New England Coast and Nova Scotia.

California…
Wildfires in northern and central California continued to burn in the
region. Moderate-to-heavy density smoke were concentrated near the
origens of the fire sources. For the wildfire in central California,
lighter density smoke dispersed northeast into central Nevada.

Southern Gulf of America...
An area consisting of light smoke likely associated with gas flaring
activity in the Bay of Campeche and neighboring areas inland, mixed
with agricultural fire emissions in Central Mexico could be seen over
the Southern Gulf of America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
