DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z September 8, 2025
SMOKE: Western Canada/Pacific Northwest... Wildfires persisted throughout western Canada and the northwestern United States. Heavy smoke was observed this evening moving east from British Columbia, concentrating within southern British Columbia and southwestern Alberta. Fires in the Northwest Territories also emitted light-to-moderate density smoke that contributed to the eastern drift of smoke reaching Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, the Northern Plains and the Midwestern United States. Lighter smoke reached as far south as the Southeastern United States and the Northern Gulf of America. California… The Garnet fire in California remained active this evening. This fire produced a moderate-to-heavy density smoke plume, which drifted north into Nevada and southern Idaho before spreading into a larger area of light density smoke. The smoke then moved east over the Rockies and merged with the smoke coming from the Canadian wildfires. DUST: Caribbean… Lightly dense dust from the Sahara Desert was seen traveling west towards the Lesser Antilles. Libby THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG:http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
