The International Law Commission was established by the General Assembly, in 1947, to undertake the mandate of the Assembly, under article 13 (1) (a) of the Charter of the United Nations to "initiate studies and make recommendations for the purpose of ... encouraging the progressive development of international law and its codification".

In accordance with resolution 79/121 of 4 December 2024, the International Law Commission is scheduled to hold its seventy-sixth session at the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG), in conference room XXI. As a consequence of the ongoing financial crisis facing the United Nations, the annual session of the Commission has been reduced to five weeks and will take place from 28 April to 30 May 2025.

Sea-Level rise

14 April 2025 The document containing the final consolidated report of the Co-Chairs of the Study Group on sea-level rise in relation to international law, Patrícia Galvão Teles, Nilüfer Oral and Juan José Ruda Santolaria has been issued (A/CN.4/783).

2024 Topical summary

4 April 2025 The Topical Summary of the debate in the Sixth Committee on the 2024 ILC report, has been issued (A/CN.4/778).

Reduction in length

1 April 2025 The 2025 session of the Commission has been reduced in length to five weeks (28 April to 30 May 2025) as a consequence of the financial crisis facing the Organization.

Call for applications

28 March 2025 A call for applications for research assistants for Special Rapporteurs or Chairs of Working Groups or Study Groups is being undertaken by the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of the Legal Affairs, in its capacity as the Secretariat of the International Law Commission. 6 March 2025 The document containing comments and observations received from Governments on the topic, has been issued (A/CN.4/779).

75th Anniversary Commemoration

21 October 2024 An event was held during international law week in New York, in the context of the annual meeting of the Legal Advisors, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Commission. (Video)

10 September 2024 The 2024 ILC report has been issued.

Briefing on the work of the ILC

5 September 2024 Briefing presented by members of the ILC on the work of its 75th session was held on 5 September 2024.

2024 ILC Report (advance version)

12 August 2024 Advance unofficial version of the 2024 ILC report is made available for the convenience of delegations. Official issuance in all six languages is expected by mid-September.

Adoption of the report

2 August 2024 The Commission adopted its report of the seventy-fifth session as a whole and thus concluded its work for that session.

Filling of a casual vacancy

31 July 2024 The Commission elected Mr. Xinmin Ma (China) to fill the casual vacancy arising from the resignation of Mr. Huikang Huang.
