Instructions for the "Web Accessibility for Older Users" Presentation

The Web Accessibility for Older Users presentation is available in two formats:

• HTML/CSS format [Draft] (updated 22 September 2010) - compatible with HTML Slidy and S5 slide formats; see IMPORTANT: Notes Section for Presentation Materials below.
• Presentation format [Draft, PPT, 366kb] - compatible with Microsoft PowerPoint, Open Office Impress, and some other presentation software; see IMPORTANT: Notes Section for Presentation Materials below.

This slide set was developed as part of the EC-funded WAI-AGE project. Other presentations are available from WAI Presentations.

What is in this Presentation

Population forecasts are showing significant increases in the proportion of older people in most countries over the coming years. However, older age is often accompanied by increasing impairments and disabilities. The Web Accessibility for Older Users presentation describes the changing demographic situation and the impact of age related impairments on Web use. It also describes the findings from the WAI-AGE literature review and discusses the project deliverables. It has 36 slides/pages that:

• Introduce the WAI-AGE project
  
• Present some demographic forecasts
  
• Discuss aging and functional decline
  
• Present findings from the literature review
  
• Emphasize the relevance of WAI guidelines
  
• Discuss some of the ongoing work for WAI-AGE

There is also an appendix with some alternative localized demographic data

The presentation slides themselves have limited text so that participants do not have to read much during a presentation. The Notes section contains important information.

To view the Notes:

• In Open Office Impress: From the View menu, select Notes Page.
• In Microsoft PowerPoint: From the View menu, select Normal.
• In some screen readers: Ctrl+Shift+N.
• Most software allows you to change the font size or zoom settings for the notes area.

Who Develops the Presentation

The Web Accessibility for Older Users presentation was developed through the WAI-AGE Task Force under the WAI Education and Outreach Working Group and edited by Andrew Arch. This work was produced with support from the WAI-AGE Project (IST 355015), a European Commission IST Specific Support Action with the goal of increasing accessibility of the Web for older people as well as for people with disabilities in European Union Member States.
