You’ll see a pattern of cracking in the paint resembling the scales of an alligator. Generally, the surface below the paint will not show through the cracks.

Any one of these situations might have caused your cracked paint:

1. Natural aging of an oil-based paint due to temperature fluctuations. The constant expansion and contraction can result in a loss of paint elasticity.
2. Application of a hard, rigid coating, like oil enamel, over a softer, more flexible coating.
3. Application of a topcoat before the primer or basecoat was dry.
4. Application of a coating over a glossy finish.
   

Remove old paint by scraping and sanding.

If needed, use a chemical remover or a heat gun. If you do, follow all of the manufacturer cautions for use.

Remove any remaining surface contamination by washing with an appropriate cleaner. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.

Sand down any glossy surfaces until they appear dull. When applying the new coating, be sure to allow for each product’s appropriate drying time (according to the label).
