What Is Paint Marring?
Also known as burnishing, marring has occurred when a painted area begins to show an unwanted increase in gloss or sheen as a result of rubbing, scrubbing, or having an object (or people) brush up against it.

Any one of these situations can cause these shiny imperfections:
- Using flat paint in high-traffic areas (a higher sheen level would be more durable here.)
- Frequent washing and spot cleaning with an abrasive cleaner.
- Heavy objects like furniture rubbing against the walls.
- Use of paint that has a low resistance to scrubbing.
How to Fix and Prevent Paint Marring
STEP 1
Repaint
If your walls are showing signs of marring, the best course of action is to repaint. This time, consider a high-quality, durable paint with a higher gloss that can stand up to whatever is causing the imperfections.
STEP 2
Prevent
- In high-traffic areas, choose a semi-gloss or gloss finish rather than a flat sheen. We also recommend choosing a durable paint formula like Emerald™ or Duration Home that can withstand washing and hold its gloss.
- Re-arrange furniture away from walls with flat finishes.
- Paint areas that require regular cleaning (like doors, window sills, and trim) with a paint that offers both durability and easier cleaning capability.
- To assure maximum washability and durability, wait at least two weeks before washing fresh paint.
STEP 3
Clean Properly
- Check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions before scrubbing or cleaning painted surfaces.
- When removing stains, dirt, and marks, use a soft sponge with water or a general-purpose household cleaner.
- Penetrating stains and marks can be removed by carefully using an abrasive cleaner and water or by applying a solution of household bleach diluted in water and then rinsing with clean water.
