The summer season might have you thinking of bonfires, but keeping your pet safe during these outdoor gatherings is key.
Lidia Vesterfelt with Michigan Humane shared some safety tips to remember when you’re having a bonfire.
Lidia suggests treating the firepit area as a “no-no zone” whether a fire is burning or not.
Pet parents should keep in mind that they should not give pets food that’s cooked on a fire because it can make them associate food with the fire, Lidia explained. It’s also important not to throw food scraps in the fire.
Aside from the danger of the flames, Lidia shared that the smoke can irritate your pet similar to how it impacts humans.
Another piece of advice is to keep hazardous items out of reach such as lighter fluid, cooking utensils, and axes.
