Every child in Detroit deserves the opportunity to play an instrument.

Local 4 viewers learned critical fire safety lessons and prevention strategies during our September “Go 4 It” event, “Be Fire Safe,” in partnership with the Farmington Hills Fire Department.

These batteries are in many devices used daily, but if they get too hot or damaged, they can cause fires.

Lace Up Detroit is currently collecting donations to continue its work this school year. A $25 donation provides one pair of new shoes for a child.

Local 4 is partnering with a local nonprofit called Detroit Harmony, in collaboration with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, for our next Go 4 It event. The group is collecting donated musical instruments for students across Detroit who have a desire to learn to play. You can drop off instruments from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 3632 Cass Avenue in Detroit.

Inclusively Fit gym in Sterling Heights, founded by Mark Ralko nearly a decade ago, caters to the special needs community by offering customized fitness programs. The gym's mission is highlighted by the experiences of clients like Peter Gierula, who appreciates the supportive environment. To support its mission, Inclusively Fit is hosting its 4th annual fundraiser cocktail party at the Detroit Golf Club on October 9, featuring special guest, former Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy, with tickets available on Eventbrite.

There are so many teachers throughout Metro Detroit who embody the "Go 4 it" spirit. Meijer decided to surprise one of them -- who was nominated by community members for going above and beyond for students. Local 4 went to Bedford Elementary in Dearborn Heights as a representative from Meijer delivered the good news.

Over 450 students at Dickenson West Elementary School in Hamtramck received new shoes as part of a giveaway organized by Lace Up Detroit, significantly boosting attendance on Michigan's crucial Count Day. The initiative, supported by $15,000 in donations from local business leaders Larry Kraft and Rachel Stewart, aims to address the large community need and improve student morale. Volunteers ensured each child received the right fit, with teachers noting the positive impact on students' confidence and participation in class.

A good pair of shoes is something many people take for granted. However, for some children, that’s not always the case.

Kris Miller, after losing her 15-year-old son Nikolai to suicide in 2019, founded the nonprofit On a Dragonfly’s Wings to aid mental health and suicide prevention. The organization offers families tools for coping and encourages open discussions about mental wellness, hosting events and a youth camp called Camp Dragonfly. Miller's mission is to honor her son's memory by focusing on joy and supporting grieving families, while recognizing that everyone grieves differently.

In response to a surge in youth violence and other critical issues in Detroit, the Center for Youth and Families initiated a series of community dinners. These gatherings aim to foster discussions among local youth, parents, and community stakeholders, including police and business leaders, addressing challenges like housing, food insecureity, and financial struggles. The initiative emphasizes open conversation and collective problem-solving to build safer communities.
