How to Paint Exterior Railings
There's no easier or faster way to update the look of your home's exterior than giving your metal railing a fresh coat of paint. Sherwin-Williams offers a variety of the best paints for outdoor railings. Just use a coat of All Surface Enamel Oil Base after priming, allow to dry and it's good as new.

Supplies for This Project
- All Surface Enamel Oil Primer
- All Surface Enamel Oil Base
- Purdy® Clearcut Elite™ Glide
- Power washer
- Sander
- Sponge
STEP 1
Clean
Wash the surface of the railing to remove any loose paint or debris.
STEP 2
Sand
Lightly sand any rough areas to make sure the paint has a sufficient surface profile to adhere to.
STEP 3
Prime
Once the surface is dry and sound, use a medium-sized paintbrush to prime the railing use All Surface Enamel Oil Primer or All Surface Enamel Latex Primer (VOC restricted States).
STEP 4
Paint
After the primer is dry, use a medium-sized paint brush to paint the railing using All Surface Enamel Oil Base or All Surface Enamel Latex Finish.
STEP 5
Let Dry & Retouch
Allow paint to dry before recoating or retouching.
Then touch up any areas that need any extra attention, and enjoy your brand new-looking exterior railing.
