Phone Scam Warning: Fraudsters are pretending to be from the Department of Justice
Fraudsters who pretend to be from the Department of Justice and the local police are making phone calls to trick people into giving them their savings. The phone numbers look like a real government number.
The caller will say you will be arrested and the money in your bank account will be seized. A second scammer will then call pretending to be from the local police to threaten you some more.
The Department of Justice and local police will never call to threaten to arrest you, ask for money, or freeze your bank account.
- If you get a call like this, it is fraud. Hang up right away.
- Never share your personal information or send any money.
- If you want to report the call, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or visit their website: Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
If you think you have given money or information to a fraudster, call your local police.
