    Doug Faulkner
    Live reporter

We're ending our live coverage of Storm Goretti now but before we do let me remind you of what is happening.

    • A Met Office red weather warning for wind is about end for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly - where a 99mph (159km/h) gust has been recorded
    • The warning meant there was a danger to life and the Met Office said there would be "exceptionally strong winds" that will likely cause damage to buildings and homes
    • An amber snow warning covers much of the Midlands and mid Wales, with heavy snow falling there. Our reporter Will Vernon had to abandon his car after getting stuck in the Peak District
    • There are yellow warnings for snow, rain and ice across many parts of the UK and adverse conditions are expected to cause disruption to travel into Friday
    • Birmingham Airport has suspended use of its runway, while train services in Cornwall and Devon have been cancelled with disruption also expected elsewhere
    • More than 65,000 properties are without power in south-west England and the Midlands
    • Hundreds of schools could be closed tomorrow, with at least 250 expected to stay shut in Scotland and dozens more in the Midlands

  5. BBC reporter abandons car in snow stormpublished at 21:26 GMT 8 January

    Will Vernon
    in the Peak District

A snowstorm suddenly swept in while I was driving to Buxton in the Peak District this evening, and the snow was accumulating rapidly on the remote country road.

The car I was driving - which was supposedly suitable for snow and icy conditions - struggled up a hill.

At the top, the car skidded and slid, and wouldn’t grip the road surface.

After about 15 minutes of trying, I realised I had no choice but to abandon it. The blizzard was strengthening with speed. I managed to manoeuvre the car as far in to the verge as possible, and flagged down a passing 4x4.

A kindly couple called Peter and Liz picked me up. They offered to take me to the town of Buxton, around 25 minutes away, where the rest of our BBC team were waiting for me.

I had prepared for the wintry conditions - the car had a full tank of fuel and I had plenty of warm clothes, snacks and drinks.

But the experience shows how quickly adverse weather can escalate, and how important it is to prepare the essentials before making a journey during a storm.

  6. Watch: Windy scenes on the Isles of Scillypublished at 21:10 GMT 8 January

Looking ahead to Friday, more than 250 schools in Scotland are due to remain closed.

They include more than 150 in Aberdeenshire, dozens in the Highlands and Aberdeen, and a handful in Moray.

It means many pupils will have had a full week off at the start of the new term, although some have been provided with remote learning.

However, the figure is far lower than the 440 schools that were forced to close on Wednesday.

Paul, who works in Hayle near St Ives, says "we got sent home from work, all the schools got closed down here.

"The route home to Helston was flooded in places", he adds.

"We'll be battening down the hatches. The wind is getting stronger."

It's been a wet day so far here in South Wales, and we've been speaking to farmers preparing their livestock for whatever the storm brings tonight.

Katie Davies' farm, which is high above Nantymoel in the Ogmore Valley, is covered by a yellow weather warning for snow.

Katie tells us farming is a "24/7, 365 day a year job".

"It doesn’t matter, whatever the weather we’ve got to get out and look after our livestock and make sure we know they’re all well fed and healthy", she adds.

There's been a bit of snow on the mountain roads, but it's only in the past few hours that it’s really started falling.
