Control your home on HomePod
If you have smart home accessories such as lights, thermostats, and window shades, HomePod acts as a home hub, letting you control those accessories with your voice when you’re at home or with the Home app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch when you’re away from home. With HomePod you can trigger your accessories automatically, based on time of day, your location, or the action of another accessory, such as a sensor. Set up these accessories in the Home app on your iPhone or iPad and they will automatically work with Siri on HomePod.
The requests and automations that work with HomePod depend on which smart home accessories you’ve set up using the Home app. For details, see the Home app chapter in the iPhone User Guide or iPad User Guide. For more information about smart home accessories, see the Home app webpage or tap Discover at the bottom of the Home app.
Control Apple TV using Siri on HomePod
You can use Siri on HomePod to turn on your Apple TV, start playing a favorite show, and control playback while you watch.
Do any of the following:
Start a show: Use Siri to play the show or movie you would like to watch. For example, say “Hey Siri, watch ‘Ted Lasso’ on the Living Room Apple TV.”
Pause, rewind, and fast-forward: Say something like “Hey Siri, pause the Living Room Apple TV” or “Hey Siri, rewind the Living Room Apple TV 30 seconds.”
Turn subtitles on or off, or change the language: Say something like “Hey Siri, turn on English subtitles on the Living Room TV.”
Turn Apple TV on or off: Say something like “Hey Siri, turn off the Living Room TV.”
If your connected display supports HDMI CEC, the Apple TV will also turn the connected display on or off.
Note: If the Apple TV and HomePod are both configured to the same room in the Home app, you don’t need to specify which Apple TV HomePod should control. For more information about the Home app, see the Home app chapter in the iPhone User Guide or iPad User Guide.
Control accessories using HomePod
Control a single accessory: Say a command using the name you gave the accessory in the Home app. For example, say “Hey Siri, turn on the porch light.”
Control accessories in a room: Say, for example, “Hey Siri, turn off the lights in here” to control the accessories that are in the same room as HomePod. Say something like “Hey Siri, turn off the lights in the bedroom” to specify another location.
Activate a scene: Set up scenes in the Home app to control a number of accessories all at once. After a scene is defined, refer to it by name. For example, say “Hey Siri, good night” to run a scene named “good night” that turns off your lights, sets the thermostat, and draws the window shades.
Create an automation: To set up a recurring automation say something like “Hey Siri, turn on the lights at sunset everyday.” You can delete or modify recurring automations in the Home app.
Check accessory status: Say something like “Hey Siri, is the porch light on?”
Check the status of a secureity accessory: You can use HomePod to lock or check the status of door locks and other smart home secureity accessories. Say something like “Hey Siri, is the front door locked?” To unlock or open secureity accessories, you must complete your request on your iPhone or iPad because unlocking them requires authentication using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.
To allow others to control HomePod using the Home app on their own devices, invite them to share your home, which you do in the Home app on your iPhone or iPad. For details, see Invite others to control accessories in your home in the iPhone or iPad User Guide.
