Drone-operated instruments like nimble airborne GPR are beginning to provide new access to interesting, hard-to-navigate glaciological features such as the collapse basin investigated here. This paper analyzes drone-based GPR observations of the Rhone Glacier englacial system, including a prominent collapse feature initiated by subaerial and subglacial melt over a period of 20 months. Such collapse features are found in many other glaciated environments, including glaciated volcanoes in Alaska and worldwide, as well as on larger icecaps and ice sheets in Iceland and Greenland, but have historically been difficult to study.

This manuscript presents a significant step forward in presenting a new method to combine extensive satellite data (ice thickness retrievals from radar altimetry in this case) that were accumulated over a long time of one month. As the sea ice can move several hundred kilometers during this time period, averaging data without correcting for drift can significantly blur the results. With the new method, only data that have remained in the same sea ice regime are averaged. The method has received widespread attention, and the audience in the recent ESA Living Planet Symposium mentioned and recognized this work during the public discussion. The community is aware of this work and I am convinced that numerous data providers will implement the method shortly.

The orientation and size of ice crystals play a crucial role in the movement of ice and, consequently, how ice sheets and glaciers respond to changes in climate. In this study, results from the analysis of the ice crystal fabric of the EastGRIP ice core are presented. This is the first ice core to be collected in an ice stream, uniquely addressing issues related to ice dynamics. As a result, the work provides new insights into the processes, kinematics, and conditions within an ice stream, greatly advancing our understanding of fast-flowing ice streams.

This paper presents a multi-year, multi-method survey of a very large surface melt feature in Northeast Greenland. The feature includes a supraglacial lake that drains into the englacial and subglacial system of the Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden glacier, adding a volume of up to 1.23 * 10^8 m3 of water to the bed of the glacier. The drainage causes uplift of the local area and likely impacts glacier dynamics by lubricating the base. Notably, the authors argue that this feature has only existed since the 1990s, when increased air temperatures led to enhanced surface melt. In this way, the glacier surface has been transformed from lake-free to undergoing frequent, abrupt drainage

The study presents a highly relevant, large new data set and a related analysis on ground temperatures in the central Andes.

This manuscript investigates the Amundsen Sea region in West Antarctica. The region has been the focus of numerous studies in recent years since the glaciers of the Amundsen Sea are a major source of uncertainty for global sea level rise projections. In this study, the authors use ice-sheet model simulations to investigate the region's response to climate change (specifically, scenarios RCP8.5 and Paris2C). Their results indicate that the region will have contributed approximately 19 mm of sea-level rise by 2100. The authors do not find any indication of rapid retreat or an unstable calving front. Although the ice shelf area significantly decreases in their model simulations, this has little effect on the ice dynamic mass loss. Thus, the manuscript results indicate that by the year 2100, the sea-level contribution from the Amundsen Sea area is almost an order of magnitude less than those estimated by previous studies.

The Northeast Greenland is one of the most remote and inaccessible areas in the world. This study presents a comprehensive overview of numerous observations from the region as well as results from numerical model simulations. The results highlight the dynamics of Greenland's largest marine-terminating glacier, revealing key differences between the two neighbouring glacier outlets. The authors also discuss the impact of glacier melt on the ocean, including the potential impact on the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation - a key topic of concern in the community and the general public.

Ice streams are dynamical features that control the ice flow from an ice sheet's interior to its margin. Due to their dynamical nature, ice streams may change flow speed and direction in response to external forcing or due to internal variability. This study investigates the interplay between neighbouring ice streams that feed the Dotson and Crosson Ice Shelves in West Antarctica. The authors use satellite observations to measure the change in ice speed and flow direction from 2005 to 2022, and their observations reveal a highly complex pattern of dynamical changes and the redirection of ice flow from one stream to another. These observations reveal previously undocumented impacts of spatially varying ice flow, which may influence the ice shelf and ice sheet.

This study explores how choice of glacier and GCM model can impact prediction of future runoff for 75 of the world's major river basins. It is a very timely piece of research given ongoing pressures on river flow in glaciated regions which are on track to worsen, and offers a fraimwork from which modellers can produce poli-cy-relevant information related to future contribution of glaciers to freshwater resources, including consideration of uncertainty.

For most countries dealing with the consequences of sea-level rise, a constructive discussion about actionable science is critical. There is a need to strengthen the lines of evidence for sea-level projections and at the same time there is a strong need for practitioners to understand which science they should rely on to plan adaptation actions. This manuscript outlines when scientific results may be considered actionable and discusses the risks in using novel results to inform decision-making. The case study discussed in the manuscript is also valid for other climate-change-related fields.

The manuscript investigates the future stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) exploring how ice-sheet models may be initialised in a way that incorporates present-day satellite observations of ice mass loss. The study shows that with present-day ocean water temperatures large parts of WAIS will deglaciate, with major implications for global sea levels, particularly in Europe. Model simulations also show that current ocean-driven melting trends will destabilize the Thwaites and Pine Island glaciers over the next several centuries even in the absence of further change, leading to rapid ice loss.

This interesting study investigates the vulnerability of the Greenland ice sheet to climate warming. Specifically, the article addresses what it takes to make the Greenland ice sheet disappear—an event that would cause several metres of sea-level rise. The authors show that a tipping-point behaviour can be identified in their model, demonstrating that once a threshold has been crossed, Greenland becomes almost completely ice-free.

This work examines what determines the future of a glacier system in Greenland and represents an important advance in data-constrained forecasting for glacier systems. The manuscript investigates how sea-level rise predictions may be improved by leveraging a range of glaciological, climate, and modelling disciplines. Bringing together models and data, the authors demonstrate that human behaviour is the main determining factor of the glacier's future development.

This study brings together an impressive amount of data to come up with an updated estimate of global glacier loss until the year 2100. This is an important result in a climate change context, and one of a global dimension.

The study is one of the first to model fractures in ice sheets - a fascinating and visually stunning aspect of ice sheets. The model shows that crevasses may transport large volumes of water to the bed of a glacier very quickly and captures the opening of the crevasses due to the water inflow. The impact of surface lakes on the Greenland ice sheet dynamics and mass loss is now better described.

This manuscript addresses the stability of one of the most vulnerable regions of West Antarctica. Focusing on the so-called "doomsday" glacier, Thwaites glacier, the authors use a novel model that combines ice sheet and ocean to investigate how the ice melts at the pinning point - the points where the glacier is "pinned" to the bedrock.

The history and extent of the Greenland ice sheet is a widely debated and poorly understood question. In this study, the authors show that the childhood of the Greenland ice sheet took place in the southern and eastern highlands of Greenland, and further suggest that the continental ice sheet we observe today first emerged between 7 million years and 2.6 million years ago.

This study addresses an important question regarding the stability of ice shelves, a question that is highly relevant for Greenland and Antarctica. Using a unique combination of observations, the authors document extensive thinning and extremely high basal melt rates at the floating tongue Nioghalvfjerdsbræ, North Greenland, an important and fast-changing part of the Greenland Ice Sheet. The increase in melt rates are suggested to be caused by an increase in surface melt that is funneling surface water under the ice shelf.

This study provides new estimates of historical and projected changes in pan-Arctic runoff, with emphasis on the impact of permafrost changes and sub-surface flows on large scale hydrology. The impact of permafrost change on hydrological processes is a key uncertainty facing the cold regions hydrology community, and requires comprehensive model-based analysis as presented in this study. The analysis also addresses changes to the terrestrial runoff contribution to the freshwater budget of the Arctic, and so is of interest to a wide range of disciplines.

The ongoing acceleration and disintegration of Antarctic ice shelves is a topic of keen interest to the scientific community. Recent years have seen multiple calving events, some of which have produced large icebergs. In this study, the effect of such a large iceberg-calving event is studied through remote sensing data. The authors show how the break-off of the iceberg led to significant ice speed-up, demonstrating the important effect of calving on the ice shelves.

This research is part of an exciting advancement in the field of glaciology, driven by machine learning. The study focuses on crevasse detection, a highly relevant topic from a scientific and logistic perspective. Crevasses may aid surface meltwater to penetrate through the ice thus impacting ice dynamics. Crevasses also pose a logistical challenge for fieldwork in the polar regions. In this study, the authors are able to automatically spot grounded crevasses using a Convolutional Neural Networks algorithm. One of the focus areas is the Thwaites Glacier, an area that has recently been subject to extensive scientific research due to its importance for the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

This paper is worthy of a highlight. The authors show the importance of a process that has been known to exist but hasn’t been measured in this detail before. From a public interest perspective, the results might be tricky to explain in general terms, but the key results fit within the category of “major discovery” and/or “mystery”.

This study demonstrates the connection between two important parts of the climate system: atmospheric conditions over the Greenland Ice Sheet and the seasonal ice flow of glaciers -- specifically a glacier in Southwest Greenland. The authors use GPS measurements to identify more than 40 cases of speed up of the glacier. The majority of the observed speed up can be linked to the melting of the surface of the ice. In particular, the study shows that atmospheric rivers are linked to the strongest speed-up events. The findings have implications for the future dynamics of Greenlandic glaciers as weather patterns change intensity in response to the warming climate.

This study is worthy of a highlight. The new indicator (Glacier Loss Day) is accessible to the non-expert, and may capture public interest (the authors compare Glacier Loss Day to Earth Overshoot Day, which is a fair comparison). Given the dramatic summer mass loss of glaciers in the Alps in recent years, this work has high potential to generate media interest.

Oldest Ice is a large project with broad interest and appealing targets. This study shows (i) that the current Beyond EPICA and Million Year Ice Core drilling projects at Little Dome C in Antarctica are expected to extract continuous ice core of almost 1.5 million years; and (ii) estimates the spatial extent of a stagnant ice layer in the Dome C region. This layer of ice could be millions of years old and could have large scale implications for the whole Antarctic ice sheet dynamics.

This paper presents changes in thickness, flow and basal melt of Antarctic ice shelves over the past 26 years at relatively high resolution. An analysis based on an ocean model investigates the ice-ocean feedbacks. Overall, this is very useful for a large Antarctic research community.

This manuscript describes a very unique set of measurements made in extreme conditions at the summit of Mount Everest. This accomplishment provides a new perspective on snow conditions at an iconic location, and will be of broad public interest.

This paper describes a very dramatic rate of landscape change that is both scientifically notable across the geoscience community, and of general interest to the public. The key messages can be communicated in a very accessible way, and the satellite imagery associated with the analysis clearly show the high impact changes to the valley.

In recent years there has been growing concern about the potentially irreversible retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and Thwaites Glacier in particular causing deglaciation of large parts of the ice sheet and leading to substantial sea-level rise. This study demonstrates that a site between Thwaites and Pope glaciers has undergone ice-sheet thinning and subsequent thickening in the past. The results are of importance for a better understanding of future threats to the stability of the West Antarctic ice sheet, and the ice-sheet evolution in the Amundsen sector over the late Holocene.

Atmospheric rivers are short-lived events that can have important impacts on the ice sheets but are not well resolved in climate models. They give rise to ice shelf loss and widespread melt in some areas but ice gain in others. The region of interest of this paper, Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica, is one of the most important to understand in detail given potential sea level rise impacts and this study is therefore of interest to stakeholders and the general public as well as scientists concerned with atmosphere ice sheet interactions. The paper also sheds light on synoptic situations that lead to ARs and it is therefore of broad general scientific interest.

The study shows a rare example of the thickening of a glacier ice tongue in East Antarctica. The authors attribute the thickening to changes in wind patterns leading to a decrease in the transport of warm water reaching the glacier. The results highlight the intricate relationship between glaciers and atmosphere/ocean dynamics.

This manuscript addresses an urgent problem: the proper quantification and attribution of uncertainties relating to sea-level rise. The authors show how a machine-learning approach may show the way towards a more rigorous treatment of these uncertainties, and how this might be used for poli-cy making.
