It's definitely magicicada season!

Hi everyone!

Cape Cod is definitely popping right now! I was on the Upper Cape earlier this week. Sandwich area the adults were still eclosing (emerging from the larval exoskeleton, sometimes while we watched), but we could hear the calling noticeably in the distance. The house we were at had hundreds in the yard. They were very docile and (unfortunately) were not attracted to the blacklights we had up.

Frances Crane Wildlife Management Area is chock full of the ad...

Time to Blitz!

June 17th will be our first day of the BREGS BioBlitz, we will be using iPads with Seek/iNaturalist to make observations and identify as many organisms in the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center Area as possible.

Because this trip is happening a week apart, groups will be switching their sample site when they return for the 2nd day on June 23rd.

This can help us getter idea of the biodiversity in this Northern area of the park, as well as indicating how different the trail vs the p...

Reservoir Walk, June.5 2025

I spent almost an hour walking around the woods surrounding the reservoir today. Without a doubt, it was the hottest day since the beginning of spring. It was gloomy and sunny outside. Since so many people walk through this area, it is difficult to spot many insects or other creatures, and for some reason, I get a bit frightened whenever I go for a walk in the woods. But I also noticed a variety of ants, a lot of baby squirrels, and several kinds of birds. It was more difficult to locate t...

What does a journal entry look like?

I just wanted to add a journal entry to see how it looks and how I could use it in my classroom. I usually tie in insect collections early before they go away once cold weather hits, but this broadens the horizons as to what species I can include. This is the place where I could have students put their reflections. Their reflection may include writing a paragraph reflecting on what they see or a paragraph or poem about how it makes you feel.

Tuesday June 10 Toronto

A mostly cloudy day, cooler than the previous couple of days, with the possibility of rain in the afternoon. We started on our walk late in the morning with low expectations but were rewarded for our persistence by sighting a two-spotted bumble bee feeding on the flowers of red clover plants that were growing in the lawn on the south side of David A. Balfour Park. The parks department earlier this spring planted new plantings of shrubs and saplings on the sloping south lawn and (so far) ha...

An inquisitive day inspecting species abundance at the end of South St near Dalhousie University

Upon my visit to the boat landing beach near Dalhousie on June 5th, there was an abundance of different species of green algae. Rockweed or knotted wrack aswell as branched wrack specimens were scattered across all intertidal zones. There was no wind thankfully, and a mild temperature of 12-15 degrees celcius. This spot is a special place to reconnect with the ocean after a hard study session and due to the steep hill that leads you down to this place, you geta release of endorphins as wel...

Looking for Venus Fly Traps in the Francis Marion Forest.

Last summer, May - June 2024, I biked trails in the Francis Marion Forest around an area looking for Venus Fly Traps. One visitor to the forest that he saw Carnivorous Plants or Venus Fly Traps there. It wasn't clear which he meant, but it sounded like he meant VFTs. He saw them in a particular "Carolina Bay" swamp.

On my bike trips, I saw Sundews and Pitcher Plants from the road and trails and posted photos here on INaturalist.

I went back this June 6 2025 to other trails ...

Windy Evening at Crystal Crescent Beach

I went to Crystal Crescent Beach in the evening in June. The beach looked beautiful with golden light on the waves, but it was very windy. Sand was flying around, and the waves were loud and rough. I saw some seaweed on the rocks and a few birds walking near the water. Gulls were flying in the wind, calling out as they passed. The wind made it hard to stay still, but I loved the wild feeling of the place. This visit showed me that the beach can be powerful and full of life, even when the w...

A Quiet dark visit to Point Pleasant Park

A few days after the storm, I went back to Point Pleasant Park, this time after sunset. The park felt calm and quiet. The sky had a soft purple glow, and everything looked peaceful. I didn’t see many people. I heard crickets chirping and the sound of waves in the distance. It was cool to see how different the park felt in the evening. Without bright sunlight, I noticed more small things, like rustling leaves and the smell of wet soil. It was also quite dark, so visibility was limited, and ...

A Stormy Day at Point Pleasant Park

I visited Point Pleasant Park in Halifax during heavy rain and strong winds. The sky was dark and cloudy, and as soon as I entered the park, rain started falling hard. The wind blew through the trees, making them sway side to side. Even though the weather was rough, there was something peaceful about being there. I saw rain collecting around tree roots and dripping off leaves. It was also hard to take many pictures because of the rain and the risk of getting my phone wet. This visit showed...
